Fire Lit Goals

Fire Lit Goals

Over the last six months or so, I have found myself visiting a local jewelry store here in Salem more often than I ever expected. In the beginning, I was simply tagging along with my husband while he satisfied his appreciation for Citizen watches. He enjoys trying on different styles, examining the colors, and keeping up with the newest trends.

While he browsed the watches, I started wandering over to the display of rings.

Some of the rings were old and worn, and I couldnt help but imagine the stories behind them. Rings carry history. They represent wedded bliss, seasons of heartache, memories of loved ones, and cherished moments from lives that came before ours. Some of the rings I saw were not something I could picture myself wearing, while others were beautiful in their own way.

And then I saw the ring.

It caught my eye immediately.

A gold band, simple and timeless, holding a solitaire round-cut diamond—just over three carats. It was striking because of its size, yet elegant because of its simplicity. There was nothing flashy about it. It was pure and classic.

From that moment on, every visit to the jewelry store became a quiet game: Is the ring still there?

Weeks passed without visiting the store, until one gloomy afternoon when I decided to stop in. I had recently purchased a stand for some gold-dipped roses and thought it would be fun to show the ladies at the store how they looked displayed.

As I leaned against the counter, I glanced down into the case…

And there it was.

Still sitting there. Still beautiful.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I asked the clerk, Would you mind if I played for just a moment? Id love to try on that ring in the center.”

She smiled and handed it to me.

The moment I slipped it on my finger, I knew—it was stunning.

I showed my husband, expecting admiration.

Instead, he kindly replied, Youre going to need to eat a lot of Taco Bell for that ring to look right on your finger.”

Well… excuse me for not having thick fingers, I thought to myself.

I smiled politely, slipped the ring off, thanked the clerk, and went on about my day.

What my husband didnt realize, however, is that he had just lit a fire inside me.

The kind of fire that motivates me to work harder than ever.

Now I am determined to earn that ring on my own—not through Taco Bell, but through discipline, focus, and intentional goal setting. And yes, while I do enjoy Taco Bell from time to time, I have a different strategy in mind.

This experience reminded me of something important about goals.

If we want to achieve something meaningful in life, we must be intentional about the way we pursue it. Goals should not be vague wishes—they should be clear, measurable, and attainable.

Otherwise, we set ourselves up for frustration rather than success.

Practical Strategies for Setting Attainable Goals

If youre working toward something meaningful in your own life, here are a few strategies that can help you stay focused and motivated:

1. Define the Goal Clearly

Be specific about what you want to accomplish. Instead of saying, I want to save money,” say, I want to save $5,000 toward something meaningful.”

2. Break the Goal Into Smaller Steps

Large goals can feel overwhelming. Break them down into smaller milestones that you can celebrate along the way.

3. Make the Goal Measurable

If you cant measure progress, its hard to stay motivated. Track your progress weekly or monthly so you can see how far youve come.

4. Set a Realistic Timeline

Ambition is good, but unrealistic deadlines can lead to discouragement. Give yourself enough time to succeed.

5. Stay Flexible but Committed

Life will throw interruptions your way. Adjust the plan if needed, but dont abandon the goal.

6. Find Motivation in the Process

Sometimes the greatest reward is not the end result, but the person you become while working toward it.

7. Celebrate Progress

Even small wins matter. Acknowledge them. They keep you moving forward.

In the end, that ring may or may not always be sitting in the jewelry case. But the determination it sparked within me is something far more valuable.

Sometimes all it takes is one small moment—one unexpected comment—to ignite the drive to pursue something greater.

And who knows… one day I may just walk back into that jewelry store and buy that ring myself.

No Taco Bell required.
